Emacs Muse 3.02.93 (3.03 Release Candidate 3) is available

I am pleased to announce the availability of the third release candidate for Emacs Muse 3.03, namely: Emacs Muse 3.02.93.

The NEWS items for this release candidate (compared to Emacs Muse 3.02.8) are here.

Here are some changes from the second release candidate. For the complete list, see the ChangeLog file.

The future

I will focus primarily on bringing the documentation up to par, especially the Projects section of the manual and the QuickStart guide (which is especially out-of-date).

I anticipate changing the license of the manual to the GFDL so that it may more easily be included with Emacs, once Emacs 22 comes out. The QuickStart guide will be placed under the GPL, so that Debian users can still have something to refer to on their local system.

Due to Debian's unfortunate and ill-advised decision (in my opinion) to effectively remove all GFDL'd documentation from their distribution, I will not distribute the Muse manual in Debian at all once this licensing change is complete (I will absolutely forbid it, to the extent that I am reasonably able, from being distributed as part of Debian's "non-free" section). I will, however, provide a Ubuntu package that contains both the Muse source and the manual. Again, this will happen in future releases and release candidates, and not this particular release candidate.

Also, expect an interesting markup proposal from David Smith at some point in the near future which might make it into the 3.03 release. It would fill in a deficiency in the current Muse markup.

Finally, I still plan to fix any bugs that I have marked as Blocker-level on the Muse bug-tracker. Definite progress was made in this release candidate, and nested list support (easily the most difficult change I've implemented in 3.03) feels very polished at this point. Some bugs relating to the escaping of special characters have me a bit worried, especially w.r.t. LaTeX. I could use some help in polishing this area of Muse. Nonetheless, if this current rate of development holds steady, we could easily finish 3.03 by the end of the year. I expect to make at least one more release candidate before the 3.03 release.
