A new milestone in gaming has been reached. Tyrian is now available
for the GP2X, thanks to the work of the OpenTyrian project, and some
others who have done the GP2X port. Many thanks to MindlessXD,
yuriks, and syntaxglitch from the #tyrian channel for making this
possible.
The OpenTyrian project has both a classic version, which is a
bug-for-bug remake of the original source, and an enhanced version
which takes the game in new directions. Only the classic version is
available for the GP2X so far.
Instructions for use on the GP2X and PC are as follows.
GP2X
- Download the zip file from the link referenced above and unpack it.
- Download the Tyrian 2.1 data files from one of the links given on
the OpenTyrian website. Unpack them, rename the directory to
"data", and move it into the unpacked directory from the first
step.
- Copy the entire unpacked directory from the first step onto an SD
card which is then inserted into your GP2X.
- Navigate to the directory from the GP2X menu, and click on the
"opentyrian2x.gpe" file.
- Enjoy thoroughly, until the batteries run out.
PC
- Download and compile the source from the OpenTyrian website.
- Download the Tyrian 2.1 data files from one of the links given on
the OpenTyrian website. Unpack them, rename the directory to
"data", and move it into the unpacked directory from the first
step.
- Change directory into the unpacked directory.
- Run
./lower-script.sh to make all of the files in ./data
lowercased, so that the game can find them.
- Run
./tyrian. If you are running this in the month of December,
you will be asked whether to "activate Christmas". If enabled,
this will change the colors of the bullets and such to look like
candy canes, and makes the voice narration sound creepier.
- At your option, go to the OpenTyrian menu and enable Fullscreen
mode. Be aware that in the "activate Christmas" prompt will not
be visible when you start the game, but you still have to press Y
or N (or Enter) to continue.
- Set aside a good 7 consecutive hours to indulge in gameplay.
- Enjoy thoroughly.
Tips
- Cheat codes are available if you are into that sort of thing. I am
fond of the Invincibility code, myself.
- OpenTyrian can use a joystick or gamepad, if you plug it in before
starting the game. Otherwise, you can use either mouse or keyboard
(space button fires, and arrow keys move).
- There is a trippy jukebox in the OpenTyrian menu for listening to
the game's excellent music.
