Installfest Fall 2006

PLUG held its Fall 2006 Installfest on Saturday. Good times were had, AFAICT. Our usual networking guy did not make it this time, so I had to set up my Mac Mini as a wireless access point and tunnel traffic through an ethernet port. It wasn't too hard, but dnsmasq was giving me a lot of trouble. Bypassing it helped a lot, so I have subsequently removed it. The process of setting all of this stuff up has been streamlined, in case I need to do this at some point in the future.

I brought in BBS: The Documentary. which was well-received. We made it about half-way through the 2nd DVD. Someone else brought in Army of Darkness, which I didn't particularly care for, and another played some Weird Al videos on YouTube which most of the participants did not care for.

One of the more memorable events of this Installfest was setting up a DEC vt100 terminal and connecting it to a laptop. The demonstrator was running Emacs through it, which is kind of amusing, given that Emacs was around back when this terminal was made. He was also chatting on our IRC channel using ERC, which made me happy.

The Bring Your Own Food idea seemed to work well, since it saved PLUG a bunch of money. The alternative, buying pizza, would have cost around $50. We brought in the microwave from our office and had hot dogs instead. I even rehydrated some chopped onion for coney dogs.
