The news that Indiana schools are beginning to switch to GNU/Linux makes me very happy. I'm kind of surprised that Indiana was one of the first states to do this ... perhaps it's related to the recent attempts to keep college graduates in various technology-related fields from moving out-of-state. That was a huge issue at a statewide tech conference that I went to 6 years ago.
Well, whatever the reason, this is a very huge step for GNU/Linux. If high school students are using it, and finding it superior in cost and stability to Windows and Mac OS 9 (which my own former high school still uses, sadly), they will almost certainly use it later on in life. To some extent, future use of GNU/Linux by students will depend on how well is administered and presented. There is a distinct possibility, however, that even in the worst case, students will explore the OS for themselves as a way to kill time, and come across the concept of software Freedom.
