When thrown off a cliff

It will take more experience to know for sure, but my guess is that a lot of hackers could do this — that if you put people in a position of independence, they develop the qualities they need. Throw them off a cliff, and most will find on the way down that they have wings.

— Paul Graham [original source]

For some reason, the allegory in that last sentence stood out to me. This semester, I'm beginning to suspect that I'm not much better than average in my CS and Math classes, at least when it comes to schoolwork. I'm almost to the point of giving up on keeping above a 3.5 GPA, preferring just to get my B.S. and a lot of worthwhile experience under my belt.

I feel like I'm eyeing the not-too-distant ground and trying to figure out what these heavy things on my back are.

I know exactly what you mean about being average, I still cant figure out how ppl are so clueless and still get the work done, I just dont understand really....Although the difference as I experienced last semester is as the semester goes to an end I managed to separate from the average, I couldnt explain this behavior either, but I still hope it happens this semester too :).
