Google's book-scanning plan

Google's procedure shifts the responsibility for preventing infringement to the copyright owner rather than the user, turning every principle of copyright law on its ear.

— Patricia Schroeder, Association of American Publishers [source]

This was given as an example of a complaint against Google's recent attempt to scan books from several libraries and make them available online (possibly for searching purposes only, can't tell).

What's amusing about this is that I applaud this response, mainly because "[shifting] the responsibility for preventing infringement to the copyright owner rather than the user" seems like a good thing.
