perdition (n): 1. Spending 8 hours on Algorithms homework because the prof likes to assign problems that are only remotely mentioned in the lecture notes and book, and 2. Never knowing how you did in previous assignments because the TAs don't hand back homework.

Welcome to the world of the prestigious state university. I survived it, and so you will you. My unsubstantiated prognostication is that you will do better than you expect. When it comes to academic issues, IMHO it's better initially to err on the side of conservatism. The upshot is --- hang in there.
