Hot fudge

Today I did something that I've secretly wanted to do for a long time, though not oft-remembered. At Jake's (a local diner), I ordered two vanilla bean ice cream + hot fudge dishes, one as a meal, and one served later as a dessert. It was immensely satisfying. The last time I ordered one of these dishes, the hot fudge came in a separate bowl, which was simply amazing: complete control over the amount of fudge, and maximum retention of heat. This time, they put the fudge directly on the ice cream. If I ever do this again — which is not very likely, given that I was unable to finish six scoops of ice cream in one sitting — I think I may direct them to serve the fudge "on the side", much like one can order chicken wings with sauce on the side. The idea amuses me.
