I went to the PAC callout tonight. Some initial impressions of each
of the series follow. I don't think I'll be going a whole lot, since
they tend to meet in the Stewart Center, which has uncomfortable
chairs and no raised seating, which makes it nearly impossible to see
the screen unless you're in the first couple of rows.
- Code Geass
- A chess-playing guy accidentally hitches a ride in a
truck driven by nationalist rebels who were carrying a
technologically-enhanced "goddess". Death and mayhem follow, and
the guy gets some strange superpower. Bleh.
- Hayate no Gokuto
- I've been following the manga series. It's not a
favorite, but it makes for good filler when some of my favorite
series don't have new releases yet. The anime came off pretty well,
and drew quite a bit of laughter from the crowd. That alone would
make it worth coming in to watch once in a while, since I savor the
rare opportunity to laugh along with other people.
- Welcome to the NHK
- The manga seriously beats the anime version,
hands down: better art, better plot, better style. I was eagerly
waiting to see how the audience would reaction to the anime's unique
and enjoyable ending theme. All I heard was a "Wow." after it was
done; perhaps it was just too overwhelming. People were rather
amused at the two different times when Satou was imagining Misaki as
a nun.
- Darker than Black
- What other anime could have a police force with
an "astronomy department"? That was almost enough to win me over.
As it stands, I'll have to reserve judgment until a few more
episodes into it. It definitely did not hook me.
- Black Lagoon
- An office worker in a large company gets abducted by
pirates in Southeast Asia and gets into some misadventures. He
starts to enjoy hanging around the pirates, yet is revolted to learn
that his company plans on turning him into collateral damage. It
does not seem to portray much regard for human life, which is a big
turnoff.
- Emma
- An awkward Victoria-era romance — this was easily the most
dull anime episode that I've ever seen. When I do come to anime
club, this and the previous anime will be when I make a food run.
- Claymore
- Youma exist which terrorize villages and eat people. The
distant female Claymore race, half-youma, half-human, battle them.
A boy begins to follow one of them around, after losing his entire
family to a youma and being mysteriously kicked out of his home
village. I'm somewhat intrigued; I could see a few interesting
possibilities happening. It's a tad gruesome for my liking, though.
- Nodame Cantabile
- A comedy goldmine. The two primary characters are
college-aged piano students, a guy and a girl, that are practicing
on a concert piece. The guy wants to be a conductor some day. All
we know about the girl so far is that she is really messy, is able
to improvise on a work, and is literally the girl next door. I
might have to follow this one on my own; it is very much worth
following.
